Juraj Valcuha



Juraj Valcuha has been appointed Music Director of the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples with effect from October 2016. He is also First guest conductor of the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin. He was Chief Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Turin (2009–16), making a very significant impact on the orchestra’s profile both nationally and internationally.

Juraj Valcuha studied composition and conducting in Bratislava, St Petersburg with Ilya Musin and in Paris. 2005 saw his début with the Orchestre National de France. In the following seasons he has led the Philharmonia, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Swedish Radio, Dresden Staatskapelle, Munich Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Maggio Musicale Florence, Santa Cecilia Rome and Filarmonica della Scala Milan orchestras. North American débuts include the Pittsburgh, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Montreal Symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, Washington DC and New York Philharmonic orchestras. Elsewhere, he has toured Japan with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.

Opera appearances have included Teatro La Fenice (La bohème); Bayerische Staatsoper (Madama Butterfly and Le nozze di Figaro); Teatro Comunale di Bologna (La bohème and Jenufa); Rome Opera, Teatro di San Carlo, Naples and Deutsche Oper Berlin (Turandot); and Maggio Musicale, Florence (Madama Butterfly and The Love for Three Oranges). He recently conducted Parsifal at the Budapest Opera.

His engagements in 2014/2015 included the San Francisco, Washington, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Symphonies, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic. With the Philharmonia at the Royal Festival Hall he paid a tribute to Lorin Maazel with the Respighi Trilogy. He also had debuts with the St-Louis Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal as well as the Wiener Symphoniker, the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin and the HR Frankfurt. The Rai touring took them to Münich, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Basel, Zurich as well as to the Abu Dhabi Classics, Musikverein in Vienna and Philharmonie in Berlin.

2015/16 marked his return to the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Minnesota Symphonies, Munich and Czech Philharmonics. He toured with Bamberg Symphony to the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Frankfurt and Cologne, as well as with NDR Hamburg to the Bratislava Festival. He also joigned the New York Philharmonic in their Vail Colorado Summer Festival.

In 2016/17 he made his début with the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra, and joined the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Washington, Montreal and Minneapolis Symphonies. In Europe he returned to the HR Frankfurt, NDR Hamburg, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale and Santa Cecilia Orchestra. On the Opera, he conducted Faust in Florence, Peter Grimes at Teatro Comunale Bologna as well as Elektra and Carmen at Teatro di San Carlo Napoli.

His engagements in 2017/2018 will bring him back to the American symphonic orchestras of San Francisco, Detroit, Houston, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Toronto. He will join the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Munich Philharmonic, the Swedish Radio Orchestra, as well as the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg and on an Italian tour, followed by concerts with the Orchestra dell´Accademia di Santa Cecilia and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai. He will have a strong presence in his Naples Theatre conducting Puccini´s The Girl of the Golden West, Shostakovich´s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Tosca as well as symphonic concerts.
